I realise that it is well over a year since we last sent a newsletter, so here is a short update from the team at Last Frontiers. We have been kept very busy (which we appreciate!), and apart from the odd webinar haven't made the time to send out a more general update until now.
What's new in Latin America
Firstly, just a quick round-up of a few travel-related news items from our region:
- There is a new non-stop flight from London Heathrow to Lima with Latam, starting 2 December 2023 and operating 5 days a week
- Awasi Iguazú has just inaugurated a new yoga deck (with an adjacent platform for the more adventurous, the start point for abseil descents into the Iguazú canyon)
- Explora opened a new hotel in Argentina's Fitzroy National Park (near El Chaltén) and won a long term contract to manage the remote lodge in the Chacabuco valley of Patagonia National Park (created thanks to Tomkins Conservation)
- There are several smart new yachts sailing in the Galapagos and a few old favourites (like the Mary Anne) have retired
- The iconic Copacabana Palace hotel in Rio celebrated 100 years this August (it's lovely, but Rio has hotels to suit most budgets)
Staff updates
Sue, Lizzy and I have been holding the fort post-pandemic, and last year we took on Elliot (who was actually stranded in Buenos Aires by that same pandemic - we don't hear him complaining too much about that). Elliot's first research trip with Last Frontiers was to Costa Rica and you can read about his experiences here:
Nasca 2024 - a unique opportunity
You may know that we are the tour operator of choice when Cambridge University plans its alumni tours to Latin America, all of which are led by a distinguished academic. There is a rather special small group trip to Peru, focusing on the enigmatic Nasca culture and led by the UK's leading expert in the field, from 30 April to 11 May next year. As there are still a few spaces left, Cambridge have kindly agreed that we may ask our own clients whether anyone would like to join the group, whether or not you studied at Oxford or Cambridge. The itinerary can be seen on the following link, and do get in touch if you would like further details. Sue will also be accompanying the group.

Astronomy and vineyards in Argentina
My most recent trip was to Argentina, last autumn, accompanying an alumni group. We managed to include several areas of the country that I didn't know, and which are definitely worth visiting. You can read my short report here:

As ever, do let us know if we can help with any holiday planning.
With best wishes from all at Last Frontiers
