The first of two programmes is being aired on BBC4 30th January 2014 at 2100.
Dr Jago Cooper, archaeologist and curator of the Americas at the British Museum explores the various theories which surround Easter Island and the Rapa Nui culture including those of Thor Hayerdahl and his famous Kon-Tiki expedition. Were the islanders responsible for their own downfall or have they triumphed living in isolation?
The primitive carved statues or Moai are believed to originate from one stone quarry Rano Raraku where some remain in situ half carved. With the aid of logs the Moai were rolled into position, dotted around the island on the shores looking in land (few look to the sea), perhaps the most famous being Tongariki Ahu. The bird man culture (Tangata manu) thought to have originated in Hawaii, adds to the intrigue of the island. Easter Island is over a four hour flight from mainland Chile. Due to its isolated position in the Pacific Ocean and its fascinating history, it will remain high on traveller wishlists around the world.
