Spring Newsletter May 2018

Welcome to a brief round-up of Latin America news and staff travels. I am conscious that we haven't sent an update since December, for which I apologise: this is always a busy time of year and the weather was particularly cold, which makes you all think of foreign travel!

In this issue:

  • Office news
  • Staff reports and feedback: Lizzy travels to Uruguay
  • Last Frontiers in the press: Jane Knight samples the new Awasi lodge at Iguassu
  • A ride across the Andes

Office news

Weaving in PeruWeaving in Peru

We welcome new recruit Nikki, who started in January working 4 days a week while she settled her young son into nursery, and is now here full time. She spent 6 months travelling throughout Latin America some years ago, and is quickly getting herself up-to-date while learning about all our (dull but essential) checks and procudures.

Hannah is in Costa Rica and Panama on a research trip, and Emily leaves next week for Guatemala and Belize, so our next round-up will include reports from both of them.

We were sad to say goodbye to Nicola, but her tapestry skills and urge to decorate a new house have led her in new directions, and she should be weaving in Oxford (a warehouse space in Jericho) by June.

Lizzy in Uruguay

Punta del EstePunta del Este

Lizzy spent a week exploring Uruguay in March  - a first for her. This small country very much surprised her with its rolling hills, deserted beaches, delicious food and excellent Tannat wines. She explored from Montevideo to the east and managed to squeeze a surprising amount in to her few days.

Last Frontiers in the press

Puerto VallePuerto Valle

Jane Knight, travel editor at the Times, asked us to help her with a trip to the new Awasi property (their first outside Chile) in Iguassu. She and her son were two of the first lucky people to stay there. When she asked what would combine well, I suggested the Iberá marshlands for wonderful wildlife and plenty of gaucho culture. She also visited the best-known ex-Jesuit mission in Argentina, San Ignacio Miní, founded in 1632. Her enthusiastic article appeared in the Times on 24 March in the Luxury Travel section and was called "A chic lodge, gourmet food, and the Iguazu Falls to yourself".

Ride across the Andes

In the saddleIn the saddle

Some years ago I rode across the Andes with Jane Williams, who owns and runs Estancia Huechahue. It was a wonderful experience, albeit involving several days with quite long hours in the saddle. Jane hasn't run regular Andes crossing trips for some years, but has just told me she will be taking one from 15-20 January 2019. Further details on request!
