Itinerary summary
Days 1-2: Curitiba
Arrive in Curitiba, the state of Paraná's capital city, and stay for two nights. On the second day, board the classic Paranaguá train for the most spectacular train journey in Brazil, with great views of waterfalls and gorges as the train rumbles over viaducts and bridges. Arrive in Morretes to explore the cobbled streets of this charming colonial town before returning to Curitiba along the historical Graciosa Road (about 2 hours) for the night.
Days 3-6: The beaches of Florianopolis
Fly to Florianopolis to spend three nights on this island famous for its pristine beaches and popular surfing scene. Spend the first day relaxing by the beach, then, on the second day have a guided tour around Lagoa da Conceição, a large inland lake on the island. Visit the governor's residence, and stop at the top of Morro das Sete Voltas with panoramic views of the lake and the Atlantic ocean. Try some shrimp fishing on the lake before continuing on to the sand dunes which stretch for 3km along the lake’s shore. You will also visit Praia da Joaquina, one of the locations for the championship surfing world cup. On the final day, have more time to relax or freely explore the island.
Days 7-10: Praia do Rosa
Return to the mainland and driven further down the coast to Praia do Rosa (2 hours) for three nights in a tranquil, hillside retreat with amazing views of golden sand beaches extending over 3km. There are nature trails to explore, you can arrange a boat trip, try surfing, go fishing or enjoy a massage. From July to November you may also be able to see southern right whales, which migrate here to breed and feed their young. On the second day, visit the town of Imbituba for some whale watching, then continue on to Laguna City, passing banana plantations and flour mills, for a guided tour of its narrow streets and famous beaches. On the final day driven to Florianopolis for onward flight connections.
Go further
You may wish to continue further down the coast from Praia do Rosa. It would be worthwhile to see the mountains and canyons Serra Geral, with its misty cliffs topped with ancient monkey puzzle trees. These canyons and the rugged, semi-wild country that surrounds them offer some of the best hiking in Southern Brazil.
