The Rupununi savannas image

Stretching southwards from the Pakaraima mountains, the Rupununi is an endless savanna interspersed with rivers, whose banks are lined with gallery forest. There are some large ranches whose homesteads provide an ideal base for exploration of the history and wildlife of the south.

Our preferred accommodation

  • Caiman House image

    Caiman House

    Lodge/Hosteria - Yupukari
The small lodge is the centre for several development projects including the introduction of classroom libraries and an internet-enabled public library. The main house has a nice open communal area with seating downstairs, hammocks and a small roof terrace with views over the village. It has a warm friendly atmosphere and combines well with a stay at Karanambu ranch.
  • Karanambu image

    Karanambu

Estancia/Ranch - 2 hours south of Annai by boat
The 125 square miles of Karanambu was the home of late Diane McTurk, who is well known for her success in re-habilitating giant river otters into the wild. The McTurk family have long welcomed visiting naturalists - Diane’s father Tiny was visited by Gerald Durrell and David Attenborough in the 1950s, when Guyana was more on the nature 'map'.
  • Rewa Ecolodge image

    Rewa Ecolodge

Lodge/Hosteria - Rewa village, north Rupununi
This very simple lodge is a great base to experience some virgin forest and spot wildlife. The area was where the BBC programme Lost Land of the Jaguar was filmed in 2008 and is accessed by 2-3 hour boat ride from near Annai.
  • Rock View Lodge image

    Rock View Lodge

Lodge/Hosteria - Just outside Annai, next to the airstrip
The rock from which the lodge gets its name is next to the owner's original house, built in the 1950s by a Brazilian, and echoing (possibly) the crown of thorns. There are extensive views over the Rupununi savannah from the top of the rock. The Dakota Bar is next to the village airstrip. The grounds also contain a neat kitchen garden, barbeque area with outside dining table, and a pretty swimming pool.
